Information for tomorrow's First Aiders, Life Savers and those wanting to re-qualify.
Some people are, apparently, put off learning and/or using first aid or giving aid for the benefit of others because of possible legal action against them.
If this is the case, please Google: “good samaritan law uk”.
Information is available on the internet, is it all good information? You have to search through until you find what you think you are looking for. Is it what is really needed? Even on a good site like “NHS choices” have you asked the correct question to get the right information for the current situation? Do you know how to use it? Do you have the time?
Have you always got internet connection with your device? Signal, battery etc.
All of this takes time, do you have the time? In some circumstances a person can deteriorate at 10% a minute or even faster. Time is critically important.
Giving aid is also about sensitivity, touch and feel, having the ability to talk and listen, this is difficult on a device.
Getting personally involved gives a realistic sense of what can be achieved.
We are hearing at this time, that the NHS is having problems. Some of this can be eased by only going to A&E for really urgent or essential reasons, not for things that can with a little training, be treated by you.
Be the person that knows how to:
Take a pulse
Give CPR
Turn a casualty
Help someone who is choking
Help someone who is burnt
Help someone who is having a possible heart attack
Help someone with a broken bone
Help someone who could be having a stroke
Help someone who is losing blood
. . . and much much more.
Once you have it, your knowledge is available instantly. You will not have to go looking for it or turning things on! Remember, do you have the time?
Helping with a broken bone can be learning how to apply a sling.
Helping with a possible heart attack can be helping them to sit down. “W position”.
Helping someone who is burnt can be learning how to use cling film.
