Sprains and strains require special and careful treatment, the wrong treatment can exacerbate or delay recovery
A simple sprain or strain can be treated locally, at home etc. with First Aid using R.I.C.E. (see below for definition)
If it is applied correctly it can be very effective
If a sprain or strain is totally debilitating, extremely swollen and/or bruised (internal bleeding), or gets worse over 24hrs. It must be seen medically
Even a mild sprain or strain can take a few months to heal
Sprains: Ligaments hold joints together, sudden uncontrolled movement can over stretch, partially tear or fully tear a ligament. The total separation of a ligament will require surgery to effect a repair.
Strains: Muscles and tendons monitor their own rate of movement, contractions etc. in normal use. Sudden, uncontrolled movement can apply quicker, greater movement than expected causing strains.
R.I.C.E. Rest, Ice, Compress, Elevate.
Rest the injured area.
Ice the area but ice must not be allowed to touch the skin and must be applied in a specific manner.
Compress the area with bandages applied in a specific manner.
Elevate the injury if possible in a specific manner.
There should be no exercise or massage to the effected area. Ibuprofen is an anti-inflammatory and useful for pain it can be used if it is safe to do so.
