This position is used to keep a casualty stable, comfortable and able to breathe - usually when unconscious, but must be monitored at all times.
The position is usually practiced for use after using CPR (Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation). Any unconscious and breathing casualty can be placed in the recovery position providing that it is safe to do so. ie: other circumstances, primary/secondary survey, injuries etc. Tight clothing must be loosened particularly round the neck and chest.
Glasses and any items in pockets should be removed and kept safe.
Usually, either available side will normally suffice for this but there are certain circumstances that can dictate the “side” to place the casualty, injuries etc. One very important “dictate” is pregnancy.
A pregnant woman is placed on their left side, this is specifically advised for the last 3 to 4 months of the pregnancy. As it is difficult to know this in any emergency I would advise that any pregnant woman is placed on their left side.
This can save the life of both mother and baby.
The dictating injuries and pregnancy reasons are learned on our First Aid courses along with the way to place someone in the recovery position which is quite specific.
