Bonfires and fireworks are good to see and hear, please be careful and aware. Organised displays take away decisions of what to buy, visitors are kept away from the display, safety and first aid are catered for, etc. Organised displays are usually much safer.
Domestic home displays are altogether different, will it be safe in your available area, buy what is suitable, think about what is being set off and when, have a spotter, have someone designated to set your fireworks off, have buckets of water and a blanket to hand, have a hosepipe to hand. Have a sand box to set your fireworks off in. Have someone with suitable first aid knowledge there and check any costume bought for children making sure that it has flame/fire resistance qualities. Please keep an eye on any children.
Burns and Scalds A Burn is usually from dry material. A Scald is usually from wet material
IF the worst happens, extinguish any fire on a person with any of the items that you have got ready, douse with water, roll in the blanket. When the burn is extinguished, check for burns and any severity.
Remove any jewellery, rings, necklaces, bracelets, etc. before the area starts to swell. Remove any clothing on the burn providing that it is not stuck, if stuck, leave it where it is.
Cool with lukewarm or cold water for 10min or multiples of ten min. If the burn is still hot/very warm, cover the area with cling film, just lay it on lengthways. If using cling film, tear off the first two turns and discard and use from the new end.
Call 999 for emergency help if required. Tell control the reason for the call (burn). Tell them where it is, the cause if you know it, how deep it is and the size. Look at the size of the casualty’s hand, including fingers. This is about 1% the size of the casualty’s body.
Remember, ambulances can be hard to get, even in an emergency. There is also waiting time at the hospital to consider. No one knows when an accident can happen, a lot of burns can get serious very quickly.
Think about the responsibility of having a bonfire party. Keep to soft drinks, if anyone brings their own alcohol talk to them about it. Everyone should be there for the bonfire and fireworks. It is in everyone's best interest to be as prepared as they can be.
Send everyone home in good health if you have had guests. If not, just make sure that everyone is ok, make sure that everything is ok and safe to leave, then go to bed happy. Have an enjoyable and safe night
