Accidents and Deaths of Children in and around the Home
More than two million children under 15 yrs have accidents in and around the home every year. On average, 62 children under 5 yrs died as a result of an accident and 76.000 under 14 yrs are admitted for treatment, over 40% are under five yrs.
0-4 yrs are the most at risk, the majority of non-fatal accidents are falls, the most deaths are fire related.
Awareness can help prevent most accidents, First Aid can help to prevent some serious outcomes.
The most accidents are to 0-4 yrs. Girls are less likely to have accidents than boys.
Occurring injuries The most serious are associated with heat/fire and falling from a height. Young children are less likely to have fractures than older children. Younger children have a higher percentage of scalds and burns as well as ingestion and poisoning.
Where accidents happen The largest number happen in the dining/living area. The most serious happen on the stairs and in the kitchen. Every year more than 67,000 children experience an accident in the kitchen. 43,000 of these are 0-4 yrs. 58,000 children have accidents on the stairs.
An accident is an accident, most are preventable with some forethought and awareness and can save a lot of upset and recrimination.
Following an “accident” First Aid knowledge is a help, it can help to reduce serious outcomes for the injured, yourself and others. It's not good ONLY TO WISH you could help. You need to be there for them.
