Water safety requires thought before action in any situation.
Learning to swim is a start, but swimming pool achievement does not easily transfer to open water competence. Open water, lakes, ponds, rivers, canals, sea, all require a different approach, from the methods of entry, movement and exit.
When we are taught to walk it is the start of a potential accident so people close doors, gates etc. to keep children safe. This same idea should be used when being taught to swim. Learning to swim can be robotic, do this, do that, being taught to think what is happening and then the difference in water takes time. It is time well spent. It can save a life.
In that time it is another’s responsibility to use this thought process. DO NOT allow children to be unaccompanied near water, DO NOT get distracted. If on the water, the correct floatation device, under supervision, is a must, not arm bands or an inflated ring.
Remember, just jumping into cold water and going straight under can be the start of a few problems.
When at the coast there are a lot of things to look for and be aware of, use the Coast Guard, they would rather talk to you for two minutes as it is better that looking for you for two hours.
Earlier this year, there was a person that had an organisation/cult. Part of the initiation was total immersion in a river. On the occasion reported on the BBC news, the person being initiated died. Probably Shock Trauma. A total misunderstanding of outside water and its potential. Also reported on the BBC news, mid-May this year, a boy died swimming in a river in Wales.
Good education is needed for any kind of water safety, start with children, get them thinking, find a water safety course for them at a pool. Find a programme called “Junior Lifesaver” it is a good start. We offer this course, see the menu above. We can provide a water safety talk, learn basic safety, learn about flags and what they mean, find out about a rip current.
On a water safety course, young children can learn how to look after themselves and help others safely; this is far better than being the one needing help.
Look at our available courses and receive qualified, professional training to help you to deal with medical emergencies.
