Following a CPR/AED training course in our home . . .
My wife and I are closing in on retirement, both clocking up over 50 years of work each. We were blessed with a grandson (Freddie) almost 4 years ago, so we are now enjoying renewing our childcare responsibilities. Together with our daughter and son in law, we attended a two hour Paediatric first aid and resuscitation course when he was about 2 months old.
As he is now moving towards school age and we move into old age, we thought we should brush up on our first aid knowledge, particularly Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), and the knowhow and usage of Automated External Defibrillator (AED) equipment. These (AED's) are now proliferating in business premises, shops and public circulation areas.
We searched the Internet for a local provider and, after making a careful decision we chose Life Saving Solutions Limited. This is owned and managed by Mr Alan Joynes, a business professional with decades of First Aid and Life Saving experience behind him, together with all necessary accreditation and certification.
An appointment was made and Alan came to our house to carry out the training in a relaxed but focussed atmosphere. The course was well structured, giving background detail about the working of the lungs, the body’s and brain’s minimum oxygen requirements for survival, the vital function of the heart and the brain/body degradation rate over time.
We then spent time identifying how to recognise lack of breathing, lack of pulse, choking symptoms, giving succinct information to emergency services, start of treatment etc. This was followed by a very comprehensive session on how to CORRECTLY apply CPR, both theoretical then practically on manikins. Three manikins were available to us (baby, child and adult) in order to practice inflations and compressions, and learn the frequency, number and timings of both applications on each manikin. We were given plenty of time for my wife and I to practice these actions, and as we were in our own home, there was no peer pressure. Every query was answered there and then so we could learn at our own speed and absorb the information.
We then moved into information about the use of an AED, which some people mistakenly think talks you through the process of starting a stopped heart. This is not so. Knowledge of CPR is vital for this machine to ASSIST YOU in getting the heart to beat normally. The casualty also needs to breath to stay alive, which the machine does not do, that needs CPR knowledge and application from you.
Alan brought an AED training module with him, and we were taught how to apply the electrodes to our adult manikin, how to follow the spoken instructions from the machine, and how to interact with any watching public and emergency services en-route to the scene.
When used in conjunction with CPR the AED can be a real life-saver, but it only has a chance of success if it’s applied correctly and with some knowledge of the first responder, which my wife and I now feel we have.
The course ended with placing the (hopefully) revived casualty into a recovery position, and continuing to monitor their condition until the arrival of emergency services.
Following our course (and a well-deserved cup of tea), we had the opportunity to ask as many questions as we wanted, and received a personalised certificate of participation.
I’ll be honest with you here – before participating in this course, I probably would have been one of the ninety nine from a hundred people who would have turned away from a life saving situation and just left it to someone else. Although I hope I never have to use this new knowledge, I feel empowered to step up and be that one in a hundred person who would try my best to save a family member or a stranger’s life. I think we all have that desire within us, it just needs switching on. Alan switched ours on.
